Red Rocks

Another weekend is ending. I’m not quite ready to endure the commute again but life moves forward. Ever wish you could teleport? I do! But that’s not the point.

Have you entered my giveaway yet? If not, go HERE now, then come back.

My alarm went off at 5:15am Saturday morning. As Woody rolled over and went back to sleep, I jumped out of bed and got ready to go. Every Saturday morning in August a local yoga studio – Core Power Yoga – is hosting a yoga class at Red Rocks Amphitheater. You know, the amazing outdoor concert venue that is the namesake for the Mumford & Sons film. I arrived a really early since I’m still learning my way around and how long it takes to get everywhere, so I was one of the first to get in. I climbed the stairs up to the entrance of the amphitheater but I didn’t have to get to the top before I was in awe of the view. Simply amazing.

I found a spot and settled in. What a beautiful way to start the day but I couldn’t help but be a little blue. As people filled the rows, it seemed the vast majority had come with friends or family and I was on my own. I enjoyed the yoga class but would have enjoyed it much more if I was there with my friends.

The class was great though – great teacher and inspiring view. The teacher was very knowledgeable and walked through the poses and flows at a good pace. I also appreciated that she wasn’t jaded by the situation. You could tell – she paused a few times to say it – that she was amazed by how incredible it looked to see hundreds of people doing yoga in unison as the sun rose. I was in awe of the setting and it was nice to know that it’s not just because I’m a newbie to the area!

Oh, the playlist was pretty fantastic too. Again, there was a DJ. I think I’m getting hooked on fitness classes with live DJ’s!

After class I hiked up about a billion steps back to the top to leave and found a ton of people in the middle of other fitness classes or gathering for them. As much as I loved doing yoga there, I’m not sure my lungs (or quads) could take a hardcore bootcamp class there. At least not yet. Definitely looked like a great workout and I got the name of one company (Bonza Bodies) that had a huge group there. You may be reading about them later on here….

Yoga on the Rocks is taking place at Red Rocks every Saturday morning in August at 7:00am. The class is $10 at the door with $1.00 going to the Whole Planet Foundation. For more info on the events, go HERE and if you decide to check it out, please let me know!!

Where have you experienced memorable views while working out – running, hiking, practicing yoga, swimming …whatever workout it might have been? * What are you looking forward to this week?

Yoga By The River

Friday evening I ended the work week on a good note leaving work a little early (although I was one of the last people in the office) and getting back in time to head over to Commons Park for a yoga class by the Platte River. A nearby yoga studio – Root Yoga – organizes the monthly Yoga by the River summer series that welcomes different teachers each time and benefits a local organization; a DJ handles the music. A lot of people showed up, including a good number of guys. Maybe I’ll get Woody to come to the August event with me!

Practicing yoga as the sun went down and the temperatures cooled was a perfect way to end the week. And I was a lucky raffle winner and went home with a pair of yoga socks.

I took another yoga class this morning, at the Lululemon store in Cherry Creek. They start with a 5k run before yoga, but given it was raining when we woke up, I decided to workout in the gym then head over for yoga. It was another great class, a bit different than I’ve done before as there was not one sun salutation, but I loved the focus on balance and found myself reaching poses I haven’t been able to do before! The teacher was from Vital Yoga; I think I’ll check out that studio soon.

Time to close up for the night so I can get some sleep tonight before another week begins.

August is almost here, what are you hoping to do before summer ends?

Some Serious Sweat

The other day I shared with you that I’m on a quest to lose some weight. It’s been great to hear from the blog and on twitter that other people love MyFitnessPal too – and to hear how you use it! So, this past weekend I was fortunate enough to have a four-day weekend and I decided to put the time to good use by getting in four strong and long workouts! Definite luxury.

Here’s how it went down:

Saturday

This workout was pretty normal for a Saturday but I did a solid hour on the elliptical followed by a brief stint on the treadmill and also with the rowing machine. I also spent a good amount of time strength training doing a variety of exercises but mostly focused on my core and upper body. Felt great but couldn’t stay too long since I had things to do before heading to the Millrose Games to spectate with the NYC Oiselle Team contingent!

Sunday

Gracekelle had texted me Saturday to see if I’d be up for yoga Sunday morning. Of course I was! Class wasn’t till 9:30am so I headed to the gym with Woody for a quick 40 minute cardio session then got myself on the subway uptown to Lululemon at Lincoln Center for the store’s Sunday Salutations class. It was a great class that challenged me a bit as I haven’t taken a yoga class in a while. Of course, always great to see Gracekelle and catch up over breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien (tip: currently offering a delicious quinoa and pear cereal).

Post Yoga at Lululemon

Monday

With Monday off for President’s Day and Woody having to work, I could sleep in a little and devote the morning to working out! It was frigid outside so I hit the gym for an hour on the elliptical and time for strength training and a little core work. Then I headed up to Yoga Vida for another yoga class. No yoga in months then two classes in two days. This class was packed full; glad I arrived early to grab a spot. The teacher was great and while I didn’t take part in the inversions at the end (I’m generally terrified of inversions) I got a great stretch and felt like it was an hour long strength session.

Tuesday

I was able to take a vacation day and extended the long weekend! Again, I slept in a little, but not too long since Woody went to work and I didn’t want him to have to tip toe around the apartment because I was still sleeping. It was a relatively warmer day so I went up to Central Park for a four mile run. It was not easy. The cold weather makes it tough for me to breathe – I can’t wait for Spring! I finished the run and headed to a NYSC near the park to finish my workout with more time on the elliptical and another strength session. I have to say it, I thought the two NYSC locations we go to regularly are in bad shape – broken and dirty machines, equipment and dirty towels strewn about, and a general sense of being run down – but this one was actually worse. Still, I was able to get in a workout but don’t plan on going back there except maybe to store a bag when I go for a run in the park. I need a new gym.

Central Park2

It was a bit intense, I admit it, but I felt great and energized. Since my run left a lot to be desired, I know I need to start adding time on the treadmill to my weekly routine – even though I’m not fond of the treadmill in the very least, it’s a must do so I can be strong and ready to run when the weather gets warmer. After a full week of workouts, with four being long ones, I took Wednesday off and slept in yet again. I knew my body needed it to recover and I was right because today’s workout was pretty good!

  • Are there any luxuries you like to indulge in over long weekends?

Vacation Yoga

Woody loves to golf but he doesn’t get to do much of it in NYC. It’s something he’s been doing since he was young and one of the sacrifices he’s made since he moved out here. Michigan has a lot of fantastic golf courses, so whenever we go up north he brings his clubs and makes tee times for at least two rounds. I do not golf, but I’m not going to deny him this pleasure. I have watched a fair amount of golf tournaments on TV over the past several years and I can appreciate the beauty of the courses and the precision of the game, but given my horrible hand-eye coordination and miserable history trying to play most sports I’ve attempted, I don’t think it’s for me. I do have to find something to do though when he golfs on vacation.

Woody found a golf course overlooking the East Bay near Traverse City and a few weeks before our trip I did a Google search for yoga classes in the area. Yen Yoga & Fitness is located on the east end of Front Street in Downtown Traverse City. The entrance to the large space is inviting with windows all across the front, a lounge area and a retail area with yoga wear and accessories. After filling out the obligatory paperwork for all first-time students, I was informed my first class was free and given a quick tour.

WP_000193

Past the front desk are two yoga studios and a spinning studio, restrooms for men and women fitted with nice showers, lockers for anyone to use during class in the hall, free mats and towels to use, a cleaning station, filtered water station and tea. The entire place was clean and inviting. While a spinning class was in session, a few others were milling about in conversation.

The class I was there for was Inspire YYF Yoga class, which is done in a warm room, usually around 90 degrees but the high humidity after a night of rare storms made the room much more warm than the regulars were apparently used to. I was early and when I first arrived in the room a staff member was busy cleaning the floor. Good sign!

I found a spot at the back of the room, but there was only enough space for three rows, at most. The room was comfortably full by the time class started at 10am; it seemed most of my fellow students were regulars, many of them knowing each other, at least by sight. The teacher was welcoming and friendly. Class started with what seemed like 5 minutes in child’s pose, which was perfectly fine for me because even two days later, I was still feeling the effects of the Dune Climb in my lower back! After some deep breathing, she turned on the music – an eclectic mix which I liked – and the pace quickened.

While I dripped sweat, I was more than happy and at peace to be in the room. I’m usually horrible at leaving everything at the door of the yoga studio, and I won’t pretend that my mind didn’t wander a few times to think about what shops I would visit before I picked up Woody from the golf course or the winery we were going to go to in the evening, but it was a great way to relax and stretch on vacation. We did a couple poses I hadn’t done since I took a week of Bikram yoga in 2010 and some of my favorites like tree and pigeon. Just what my body and mind needed.

My only regret is that I didn’t go to Yen Yoga & Fitness until Thursday and only had once chance to take a class there. Friday morning while sitting at a diner in town with Woody and my parents (who arrived the night before), my phone rang and a local 231 number was on the caller ID. It was someone from the studio calling to see how I enjoyed the class and let me know about their new student packages. Unfortunately I had to explain that I wasn’t from the area but let her know I’d be back for another class next time I’m in the area. It’s true – just wish it would be sooner rather than later. While I think the $17 drop-in price for a class is a bit on the expensive side, the facility is pretty nice, the staff welcoming and the class was great. If I lived in the area I would definitely be a regular. It just seems like a fantastic place to spend some time when you’re not out on the water or enjoying wine at a local winery.

On another note, we picked up the local Traverse City Record-Eagle that day while we were in town and on the front page of the Sports section, below a story about another Tigers win (woot!), was a story about three new running races being planned for the Fall in the area! How often do you see running on the front page of the Sports section? I love how running, and outdoor sports in general, is such a part of the area culture.

My On and Off Relationship with Yoga

For most of this year, my relationship with yoga has been more off than on. But not this week. It’s been on this week! So on!

I heard about Yoga Vida a while ago and made a mental note to try out the studio. A few times I checked out the schedule hoping I could make a class but it didn’t work out until earlier this week. Tuesday afternoon, Grace and I met for our first class at the 99 University location. Turns out a lot of other people had the same idea – Off work early for the 4th of July holiday makes it the perfect time to take a yoga class!

Yoga Vida has a great offer for first time students – $10 for the first class, which comes with unlimited class for one week and one free mat and towel rental (each). The University Place location is great as it’s only a few blocks from Union Square which means it’s easily accessible from several subway stations. The studio occupies the 6th floor of an office building. Leave your shoes at the door and get ready to relax.

There are two studios but the classes I took this week were all in the large studio (pictured below). There are large windows along two walls, lots of space for mats, ceiling fans and cubby holes in the back for your things. There’s a nice lounge with a few couches and a table covered in newspapers and magazines. A wall is covered with mats people store at the studio so they don’t have to lug them around the city (of which I definitely see the benefit of). Four changing rooms are in one corner – plenty of privacy but in the lounge and a long line forms directly after class. The people are nice, the studio is comfortable and the skill level of students is varied.

Yoga Vida_large studio

Because I like to take advantage of a good deal, I took three classes at Yoga Vida this past week – each Flow, but each very different. There was a different teacher for each class with a unique style, and all fantastic. Each class was a great workout that taught me something new. I have to say, I do appreciate when the teacher demonstrates some poses throughout the class and also helps to correct postures when necessary. Sometimes I wonder if my pose is right, and it’s really helpful to be corrected when it’s not so that I am able to do it right the next time. When we’re not corrected, we’ll probably continue to do it wrong again. Today, the teacher corrected my form on two poses and while I felt like I was going to topple over, it was so enlightening to feel how it’s really supposed to feel. Maybe one day I’ll get there on my own!

While the first visit is a great deal, single drop-in classes are only $12 each, which really isn’t bad compared to other studios. They also have packages to make classes cheaper. I’d love to take more yoga classes but with my gym membership adding yoga on a regular basis is just too expensive for my budget. After these three classes though, I’m sure I’ll find my way back to Yoga Vida every once in a while! One other thing I want to mention about this studio: the music was great! Personally, I love a more modern soundtrack and these classes did not disappoint!

Today after class I decided to reward myself with an iced cold tea from Argo Tea! This hit the spot!

It’s Good to Go Home

I’ve been away for the last few days. I took a trip, sans husband, home to visit my parents for the long weekend. It was a great few days and I’m glad I had the chance to do it. Not only did I spend time with my parents, but I also got to see my 91 year old Grandma, my great aunt and uncle, and friends. We had ice cream from the Dairy Store, a tour of the changes around campus, a trip to Target and watched the Spartan Men’s and Women’s basketball teams both beat Purdue!

The trip was actually my Christmas gift to my parents, along with a dinner cooked by me. Sweet potato burritos and quinoa. Apparently the meal was a hit. I think my Dad would have eaten another burrito if I had made one!

Of course, when in Okemos, I must stop by Playmakers, one of the very best independent running shops in the country. Since I’m not running I didn’t really have any reason to buy anything, but they do have a lot of super cute things including Oiselle tees!

Oiselle Tees

While I’m at home, if I’m not able to run (like now), I don’t have many options for getting my sweat on. This time I decided to try something new. I took a yoga mat home with me and found a yoga studio in town to try out. Yoga State just opened a new studio a few miles from my parents house so I made my way there Monday morning for the 8:15am class. Christopher was the instructor and there were only two other people in the class! I have a feeling it was partly due to the fact that it was a holiday and the first class of the day as there were quite a few people arriving for the 2nd class as I was leaving. This was my first class in close to 6 months. I pushed myself, but not too far. I wanted a stretch and a sweat at that’s what I got. Christopher was a good instructor and helped me into a few poses I was struggling with after such a long break, and he didn’t blink when I had to bail on a pose or two, but I felt like it was all a bit rehearsed and found myself wondering if all of his classes are exactly the same. Nonetheless, I’m glad I went and feel good about going to another class. I tried taking pictures but they just turned out way too dark.

My plane Monday night took off from Detroit 15 minutes after it was supposed to land at LaGuardia. This meant I had about two hours to fill in the Delta terminal. If you didn’t know, from one end of the terminal to the other is 1 mile. Since I had time on my hands I walked from one end to the other. Along the way I saw Flavor Flav, clock necklace and all, and stopped for a 10 minute chair massage. If I’m going to get stuck in an airport, I’d rather it be Detroit than LaGuardia.

WP_000805

Even though I had so much fun at the airport, I would have much rather had an extra hour with my parents. Too bad we didn’t know about the delay earlier. Oh well, I still had a great time. I’ve been in NYC for almost 8 years now, but my parents home will always feel like home to me.

The Start of a Great New Year!

Yesterday was a pretty lazy day for me, which is exactly how I wanted it. We actually slept in until 9am (crazy, I know!) and then I made my delicious and indulgent peanut butter and banana stuffed French toast. I didn’t let that indulgence get me off on the wrong foot though. I also did some cleaning, laundry and got myself to the gym.

I love and loath the gym from January – March. You know, after people have made their resolution to get fit and go to the gym more often and there are lines for equipment and people who still don’t quite understand the need to wipe off a machine after use. Thankfully today our regular gym was closed so I went to the workout room in our building. It was empty when I arrived just after noon but didn’t take long to fill up. By the time I left there were 10 other people, which is a lot of people in the small space.

There was one totally ripped and fit woman who, I admit, I was staring at and was in awe of. Probably in her late 30’s, she was incredibly fit and strong. Great motivation. A few hours later, I was thinking I should have asked her if she’s a trainer! I could use one.

I had to laugh when three guys walked in together a few minutes before I left who were all wearing bright white sneakers. One guy got on a treadmill only to quickly say to his friend “I think I should stretch a little first.” Ah…newbies.

So, because I can’t yet start on my race schedule for the year since I don’t even know when I can run yet, I have to come up with other goals for the year. One thing I want to focus on this year is going to yoga more often. I do love yoga, and in the past I’ve had my spurts of yoga-ness, but this year I’m going to make a more concerted effort to make time for it. I think it will be good for me – mind, body and soul.

There are three places I have in mind –

Yoga to the People on St. Marks Place, where I’ve been several times before. They have big studios that fill up quickly and work on a donation basis, asking for $10. The studios are pretty basic and it’s in an old walkup building on a busy street, but conveniently located between work and home. I’m going to try going here during the week for their Power Vinyasa Flow class once I’m done with PT.

YoYoga is only a few blocks from my office. Only $12 a class, I haven’t tried this studio yet but a few co-workers have. They have a class at 6:45pm each night that I might be able to get to once in a while.

Lululemon stores in the city have free open-level classes on Sunday morning, which I have been to quite a few times with Grace and Kether. The two closest stores to our apartment don’t have their January schedules posted yet, but I’m hopeful they’ll still offer these classes in 2012.

So far, this is the only fitness goal I’ve set for the year. We’ll see how my appointments with my Endocrinologist this Wednesday and Sports Doc on Friday go before I start setting any more ambitious goals.

I’ll tell you this though, I want this year to be a healthy, fun and adventurous year. I hope you have the same thing in mind for yourself!

Reboot Weekend

Since I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in April, I've been playing things safe, which means my workouts have been on the easy side. While we were really good about eating healthfully (most of the time) and getting regular workouts in (plus the occasional trek up a mountain) whenever vacations come in to play, regular schedules are thrown far out the window. All this leads to one major fitness funk and the need for a reboot!

Thursday on the way to work I had the grand idea of creating a weekend focused on fitness and health so I got to work and this is what I came up with.

Saturday morning I started with a 3 mile run (per my half-marathon training schedule). I got up at 7:15 and was out a little before 8am. It was going to be a hot day; high 70's and a bit humid at that time. I felt good as I started off and didn't think it was too hot. There were a lot of people out and I was thinking of everyone over in Queens running the half-marathon hoping they were all doing well. My legs felt great until....they didn't. Out of nowhere I could hardly run another step. It was the strangest thing I've ever experienced and my run ended up being one of the worst I've ever experienced. It was absolutely demoralizing. When I got home I was hot, frustrated and confused. Not a great way to start my weekend. But, I had to put it behind me and move on because I had plans.

Next up was Yoga at Yoga to the PeopleThe classes at the East Village location are supposed to be Power Vinyasa Flow, but Saturday morning it was more like a hot yoga class. The 2nd floor studio was full when I arrived but there was room in the bigger studio on the 3rd floor so I took a spot and laid down for a few minutes before class started trying to put my head back in the right space.

This was my first yoga class in since before my injury. The instructor was great, the music was great, the class was full of everyone from very experienced yogis to newbies. I fall somewhere in between. If you didn't know better, by the looks of the guy on the mat behind me you would have thought we were in a Bikram yoga class! Yes, it was pretty hot in there but it felt great to move and stretch. My head was falling back into place and I was getting centered.

After class I picked up a smoothie from Liquiteria (which I've been wanting to try for a while now) as I headed to Union Square to meet up with Woody for the farmer's market and our weekly trip to Trader Joe's.
cold deliciousness + protein!
By the time we got home I was still feeling a bit dejected and annoyed by my earlier disaster run, so after we unloaded everything I grabbed my headphones, keys and water and headed to the gym. The place was empty so I jumped on an elliptical to make amends. This workout was much better. Only 35minutes, but they were pretty solid and strong minutes alternating resistance and speed. I only found it slightly odd that the new hot dog vendor on the corner thought he could make a sale to my sweaty self only seconds after I left the gym by offering me a "sweet hot dog" in 89' heat!

After I showered and ate, we headed out to cross something off our 'summer to do list.' Even though I had a lock and we took very little with us, we weren't quite prepared as we should have been! The Downtown Boathouse on Pier 40 (Houston St) has kayaks that you can use for free and I've been wanting to check it out! When we were in Seattle we kayaked from West Seattle and now that the water was cleared by the DEP after the major sewage spill (yes, seriously. It was gross) we were going to kayak in the Hudson!

So, it turns out these kayaks aren't very waterproof. They use sit-on-top kayaks, which I've never seen, and have holes in the bottom of them so water sloshes in and out the entire time! I'm pretty certain that the volunteers who work there know from 100 ft away who the newbies are, because they're wearing khaki shorts instead of bathing suits! Still, we had come all the way there, we were going to do it! Thankfully I had worn running shorts that dry quickly. Woody, on the other hand, was one of those khaki-short-wearing-newbies! Poor guy. You have to stay in the bay, so there's not a lot of exploring to do, but we stayed in for a little more than a half hour (when it's really busy there's a 20min time limit) paddling around the boats and contending with the big waves that seemingly came from nowhere! Even though it took a while for us to dry off, we had a great time!

I spent the next hour or so at home cooking up some of the great food we got at the market then called it a day. I had a big day ahead of me on Sunday.

Sunday morning my alarm went off at 6:35am. My training plan called for a 5mile run and I was going to get this done. I was not going to let Saturday's run get the better of me but since it was much more humid out, I opted to run on the treadmill in the gym in our building. It opens earlier than our usual gym and the a/c is better! I finished my five miles and felt better about my running. Must have been a weird fluke, right?
Run. Done.
I headed back to our apartment, put on some dry clothes and headed out for my first Physique 57 class. I've been interested in this since they opened several years ago but for one reason or another (mostly cost) I had always put it off. The 9:30am class was the perfect time and they're running a deal for newbies - buy one class, get a second free! I couldn't pass that up. My shoulders were already hurting a bit due to the downward dogs of Saturday's yoga class, but I was ready to tackle this with an unsuspecting eagerness. I had no idea what I was really in for.

Alex, the instructor, introduced herself to me and asked if I had any injuries she needed to know about and tipped me off that I needed to set up with the weights in the middle of the room rather than at the bar. Less than 10 minutes into class my arm muscles were burning. Then my quads, calfs, and abs. There were only 6 people in the class, which was great because she was able to work with us and correct my posture and positions throughout the hour. (the class after seemed much bigger) I didn't do it all perfectly, but I worked hard, got a lot of it and my muscles are better for it. Definitely different than any other class I've taken and I hope to incorporate a few of the moves into my regular workouts. And I'll be better prepared next time!

A VitaCoco was very much needed on my walk home (about a mile and a half?) and the rest of the day was spent going to the New Amsterdam Market, cleaning, making granola and dinner, reading and blogging. My weekend was not just about running around and sweating, it also needed some relaxation, healthy eating and a mental boost as well.

Next weekend, my parents will be in town, so it'll be pretty active as well, but in other ways!

Best Yoga Class Yet... Thank You Lululemon!

It's true. Yesterday I took the best yoga class I've taken yet. It was incredible!

You know I've been taking Sunday morning yoga classes at the Lululemon store on the UES for a couple months now. Well, since we've moved downtown it's not very convenient to head up there each week so I decided to try the class at the Soho store yesterday. They don't always do yoga on Sunday, which is kind of a bummer since I've really taken to liking this workout schedule, but I'll make it work.

Anyway, this class yesterday was amazing. The teachers rotate every week and this week we were lucky to have one of the Lululemon Ambassadors from Vancouver (where the company HQ is). I was a bit intimidated when I first saw Will, with his layers of necklaces, bracelets, bandanna, eye makeup... I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. But, I quickly found out that I was in for a class like none other I've taken.

We started the class by singing the chorus of "Livin' on A Prayer." Never done that before. Will had tons of energy and humor but in an instant he would be completely zen and the music that went along with the class would completely change the mood. He had the 20 or so students "shake our Asanas," accept who we are, and support those around us by being who we want to be. Towards the end of the class he took us through a flow series and then let us go at our own pace through a song. The whole experience was so peaceful and serene, that I was able to complete most of it with my eyes closed. I felt completely in the moment, clear headed and balanced. I've never felt quite like that before, it was a new experience. The class ended with us singing the chorus to "It's My Life" before several minutes of meditation during which Will sang a song he had written for his yoga practice (oh, did I mention he has a record deal?).

It was an incredibly invigorating and peaceful experience. I felt renewed and uplifted as I left the class. It was like nothing else I've experienced and at times I felt like it was the weirdest yoga class I've ever taken, but I also wish I could take a trip to Vancouver to attend more of Will's classes. I can't do the class justice through my explanation of the class, but I can tell you that if you ever have the opportunity to take a class taught by Will Blunderfield you should be the first in line!

Oh, and I have to mention this, too. When I first got to the store, there were only a few other people aside from store employees and Will. One guy who was already there (I'm pretty sure Will's friend) was stretching on a mat. I could not help but stare! I know, horrible! I tried not too, but this guy was so incredibly flexible. He must be a dancer because he was so graceful and moved perfectly in time with the music that was playing. I was in absolute awe.

Obviously, my morning (which also included a 2mile round-trip jog to the class) was uplifting and centering. It was the perfect way to start my day and put me in such a great mood.

Anyone want to go on a trip with me to Vancouver?!

Thank you Lululemon & Will for an amazing experience!

How is your holiday weekend going? Any plans for today?

Sunday Yoga!

Truth be told, I haven't practiced yoga since my 'Week of Hotness' in May. I have every intention to make yoga a regular part of my fitness routine, but I've just been caught up in my regular routine of cardio and trying to get back to running. Sunday morning though, I took a first step in the right direction.

On Friday I mentioned Lululemon's Salutation Nation event, which is planned for August 7th, in my "5 for Friday" post. You may not know that all Lululemon stores host free weekly classes including yoga, running, bootcamp, and more. These classes are both fantastic marketing tools and a great way for fitness enthusiasts, or those just getting started, to enjoy a fitness class for free.

The class I attended was at the store on 3rd Ave and E 66th St, started at 9:30am and was led by Sarita. I arrived about 10 minutes early, thinking it would be crowded, and I was right. Mats were laid out throughout the store between fixtures of clothing and accessories. I filled out the waiver (good for 1 year) and found a mat in the middle near the door. I'm not certain how many people were there since I couldn't even see everyone, but I would say there were probably 30 or so, at least six being men. Not everyone wore Lululemon, which was a relief - I didn't get weird looks for wearing my C9 gear from Target. Sarita was energetic but a little laid back, perfect for Sunday morning.

I could tell right away that it had been much too long between yoga sessions. My muscles were really tight. The students were of all levels, which was also comforting; I didn't feel out of place when I couldn't extend a pose quite as far as I had wished. I did feel a bit of tension in my right heel a few times, but with a little modification I was able to overcome it. I didn't feel any pain during Bikram classes, but I'm sure that was due to the extreme heat loosening the muscles. The teacher was clear, demonstrated some poses, and gently corrected some students (including me).

Overall, I enjoyed the class. The atmosphere was really chill and just what I needed yesterday morning, so I plan to go back next week. Once I can run full speed again (and for more than just two minutes at a time before a walk break) I'm going to check out their variety of running classes.

It was a bit odd to be doing yoga in the midst of sports bras and cropped pants, and there are no mirrors to check your posture, but there was also no pressure to buy anything, and since the store wasn't officially open yet for the day, I'm not sure that you could buy something even if you wanted to. This is an ingenious marketing technique and other brands should take notice. Some running shops host run nights, which is awesome. As long as the company doesn't push sales too hard, I think it's a great idea. If a brand or shop begins a strong relationship with someone through free events, chances are the person will start to feel a strong sense of loyalty to that brand/shop and make it their go-to for products and advice. Events like this yoga class are perfect brand extensions that only prove that they are experts in their field. It was a lesson in relaxation and an experience in great marketing.

After my shower I promptly put on my comfy pair of cropped Lululemon sweats.

Injury update: My foot is feeling better every day. I did walk/jog intervals again on Saturday and this morning. This week I'm extending the jogging intervals just a bit. Still taking it slow and easy - only 3 days of this each week. I am determined to do this right and build a strong base so I don't injure myself again.

Have you taken a fitness class or joined a running group at a local store? What do you think about them?

Recap of One Hot Week (aka Bikram Yoga Week)

You've probably read my posts last week about Bikram Yoga. If not, you can check them out herehere and here. Or, to quickly bring you up to speed, last Sunday my friend Gracela and I got one week new student memberships to Bikram Yoga NYC to try Bikram Yoga for a change of pace. In the end, I went 5 times.

Here's a quick recap of each class:
Class 1: Was a bit worried when I saw students in the class prior to ours wringing out their shirts and sweat dripping from them like a faucet! It was extremely hot and I had to rest during a few poses. A bit light headed but I stretched myself (figuratively and literally) and felt refreshed afterwards. It was a tough class, tough teacher. Even regular students said that.

Class 2: 100% humidity outside and an early class time (6:15am) meant I had a miserable class. I was struggling by the end of the warm-up section and couldn't catch my breath about 75 minutes in and had to leave the room. The biggest challenge for new students is often just staying in the room. This time I couldn't do it. I felt a bit deflated afterwards but learned some great lessons.

Class 3: Breakthrough! A later class time, making sure I was hydrated enough, concentrating only on what I was doing at that moment, and 'embracing the sweat' made for a much better class! I had to rest during 1.5 poses, but that's okay. I left feeling refreshed and strong.

Class 4: I woke up feeling a bit of soreness in almost all of my muscles. The heat really allows you to stretch your muscles farther than normal, and I could tell it was really starting to work! I had the same teacher as class 2 and was a bit nervous. I tried adding an electrolyte powder to my water and followed the same pre-class routine as the day prior. I felt stronger and held my poses longer. I hardly had to rest and I felt the 90 minutes went by faster than before. The teacher mentioned I was looking much better and gave me a few tips on specific poses that really helped. Again, left feeling great!

Class 5: Met up with Gracela again for class Saturday morning. My muscles were tight again going in. My legs, arms and back in particular. I used another electrolyte packet in my water. The class was full with several new students. I didn't think the room was particularly hotter than the other days, but I definitely sweated more than any other class. It's kind of gross, but it's good for the body, so again, I kept repeating to myself as I'd wipe of the sweat to get a good grip for a pose "embrace the sweat!" I held two balance poses for the entire time, which was awesome because I've had balance issues on my right foot since my injury and people all around me were falling out of it! And my last class finished on a great note. I felt strong, refreshed, and ready for a great day!

Overall, I am so thankful Gracela suggested we do this! My muscles today are incredibly tight and I had a pretty uninspiring workout this morning (two days post my last Bikram class) but that just means that the workout really worked! I worked muscles in ways that I haven't worked them before, or at least not for a long time, I stretched them farther and pushed myself farther than I thought I could. The sweat sessions were great to workout all the toxins that find a home in my body and, as the instructors explained, the poses are based on scientific research to bring health and ease to those who practice it, so I feel I did my body some good last week. I'd love to take more classes but they are pretty expensive. If I didn't have a gym membership, I'd probably consider this as part of my ongoing fitness routine.

I strongly encourage everyone (yes, you guys can do it too) to try it. But, don't quit after the first class. Give it a few tries!

Quick fitness note for NYCers: The Shape Up NYC program starts again May 17th! To help combat obesity in NYC, the city, in a new partnership with Equinox Fitness Clubs, is expanding the program this year by focusing on low income areas, providing FREE fitness classes in city parks, community centers, and other locations (I took a yoga class along the Hudson River last year!). In all, there will be 222 class in 42 locations (all 5 boroughs) reaching over 7,000 people each week! Classes begin May 17th, and you can search for ones near you HERE. There are classes for everyone and every interest! I think this is a great idea and can't wait to check out a few! Also, if you're interested in volunteering as an instructor, they are still looking for more.

What are your health and/or fitness goals for the week?

I Conquered Bikram Yoga!

Yes, I did it! I went back to Bikram this morning for my third try and I have to say, it was SO much better than the first two! You may remember my experience on Monday was fairly disastrous, well, this one was completely different. I only sat out one full pose and the first set of another. Even though I was sweating buckets, I decided to 'embrace the sweat' and go with the flow! I breathed deeply and just focused on the pose at hand. I was a bit apprehensive before class, worried that I wouldn't make it through, but I told myself that if I could make it through a marathon with a broken foot, I could make it through a yoga class! And I did!!

I also took the lessons I learned on Monday and applied them today:
1. I woke up at 5:15am for the 8:00am class and went to the gym for a quick cardio workout prior to class.
2. I drank a cup of green tea at home and then at least 20oz of water prior to class.
3. the weather was much better this morning - low humidity
4. I put my mat down to save my spot, but then left the studio until just a few minutes before class started.

I definitely think these changes helped me get through the class and finish strong and feeling refreshed! Yoga tip: when finished with class, fold your mat in half and then roll it up. This way you don't get the floor dirtiness on the side of the mat that you use.

After class I spoke with a few other students and one suggested having an all-greens juice because just after Bikram yoga, your body is able to absorb all the nutrients from the kale and spinach more easily. So, off I went to give it a try. I had a few sips as I left the health food store, but decided I'd like it better cold. I also decided to add just a tiny bit of Maca Powder.
Gotta say, I read tons of great stuff from other bloggers about how much they love green juice and 'green monsters.' Let me just say, it must be an acquired taste. I also think it may have been better with the apple and not just all greens. Still, it was good for me!

Quick flashback to last night. I told you yesterday about the Cinco de Mayo dinner I had planned for Woody and me. Here it is:
Mexican inspired chili
Ingredients: 1 large can diced tomatoes, chopped yellow & orange peppers, 1 can drained & rinsed black beans, 3/4 container of Trader Joe's black bean & roasted corn salsa (it's in the refrigerated section). I also added a dash of chipotle and topped with avocado. I felt the kick from the chipotle, but apparently it wasn't enough for Woody!

Finished meal:
I made 'tortilla' chips by cutting two of Woody's whole wheat wraps into 8 sections and just sticking in the oven for about 15 minutes, turning over a few times so they wouldn't burn. I made them plain, but might add a little evoo and pepper or chipotle to spice it up a little. We also enjoyed our Cherry Sangria and a pear for some fruit!

Did you know that tomatoes are a super fruit?! It's true! Tomatoes are incredibly important to include as a regular part of any healthy diet. I never ate tomatoes when I was young. Ketchup and tomato sauce, fantastic. Actual tomatoes, disgusting! Thank goodness I have changed my ways! Tomatoes are full of vitamins and antioxidants, like lycopene, which some studies say can help protect against cancer and heart disease (especially when the tomatoes are cooked). While you may think of Italy when you hear 'tomato', it actually originated in South America, and after being transported to Mexico probably made its way to Europe (either Italy or Spain) through conquistadors. From there, tomatoes spread throughout the world over several hundred years, not making it to North America until the 1700's. Today, most tomatoes are picked unripe (still green) and treated with the chemical ethylene, which allows them to ripen in storage and while being transported. The shelf life is longer than vine-ripened, but the taste and texture isn't as good. There are many varieties available, all with health benefits, so add them to your meals however you can!

What lessons have you applied to your second (or third) try at a new workout in order to conquer it?

Lessons Learned

Runners learn things all the time from training runs and races. Even easy leisurely runs can teach us things. When and how much to drink while we run, what to eat before the run, what clothes work best, the best type of warm-up and how much stretching to do afterwards. The list goes on. Well, I learned 4 important lessons this morning at my second Bikram Yoga class.

1. Waking up only 45 minutes before class is not enough time.
2. I need to drink more water prior to class (hence needing to wake up earlier for a morning class)
3. 100% humidity is not ideal conditions for hot yoga.
4. Don't go into the studio until just before class starts. Why start sweating before the workout begins?

I hate to admit it, but I had to leave class early today. Yesterday was tough, but today was worse, and I'm pretty sure it was because of those four things. The class was full and there were quite a few other students struggling through and some left the class as well. That definitely makes me feel a little better, but I still feel disappointed in myself for not sticking it out. But, I was laying there on my mat and could not catch my breath for the life of me. I felt light headed and my lungs were heavy. So, I knew I had to get out of there. Hopefully my next class, Wednesday morning, will turn out a little better.

Last night I made a delicious salad. I don't know about you, but warm weather always makes me crave fruit and salads. Not such a bad thing. Salads can be super easy to throw together in a pinch and are an easy choice when your short on time or just plain starving!
In the mix: green leaf lettuce, zucchini, chick peas, grape tomatoes, hard cooked egg, chives, cumin seeds, and a little evoo. I also had a small pear on the side. This totally hit the spot.

A quick PSA: May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. Skin cancer is equal opportunity, so everyone is susceptable to getting it, especially those who spend a lot of time outdoors. The key is to wear sunscreen (and enough of it) and to stay in the shade as much as possible when outdoors. Click HERE for more information including tips on staying safe, how to do self-exams, and where you can get free screenings.

What do you do to stay safe in the sun? Do you remember to put sunscreen on even during the winter?
