6 Things To Help You Through Your Run

I woke up this morning and practically ran to the TV to catch the start of the live NYC Marathon coverage. Marathon day was always my favorite day of the year when we lived in NYC and even now, I soak up as much of it as I can. Watching the live stream on TV and the ESPN app (so I can see & hear the commentary), track my friends on the TCS NYC Marathon app and am glued to social media all day following along. Anyone else obsess about it like I do? Maybe one day I'll get back there and take the most amazing tour of New York City again.

So, in the spirit of the most awesome day of running each year, I thought I'd share a few items that help me get through my runs - the easy ones and the tough ones. One of the best things about running is that all you really need is a pair of running shoes, but other things like great socks, layers, and more, can help make the run a bit easier and enjoyable.

Quick note: all of these items are mine and none of these brands know I'm writing this. I just really love them and want to share.

This time of year, layers are a must for runners. I love these pieces because they fit well, work for the in-between weather days, and super cute. As you know, I'm a big fan of Oiselle - two of my favorite pieces are the lux layer long sleeve, which is incredibly soft and the perfect weight, and the aero tights for their moto design, ankle zips, and a back zip pocket that even fits my xl Galaxy S7 phone and holds it tight while I run. I've worn these for training runs and races for over a year now and always get compliments. I've also been wearing Stance socks over the past year and love them for the great feel, how they hug my feet, ideal thickness, and that they come in several different heights and fun designs.

Momentum Jewelry was one of our BirdCamp Colorado partners this year and provided us with these great motivate wraps for all the campers. I love mine and this one speaks to me strongly right now. They are lightweight and comfortable so you can forget you're wearing them during your run till you need a little boost. After seeing Rebekah and her husband wearing Qalo rings, I was intrigued because my fingers always swell when we go hiking and trail running. I got rings for Matt and myself for our wedding anniversary this year and we both wear them often. They come in a ton of different colors and are really inexpensive and virtually indestructible; both excellent qualities. Last, but certainly not least, is the UD Jenny Clutch. I was looking for a new handheld before we went to Breckenridge for a trail run this summer and I'm in love. It's lightweight with a soft and collapsable, 17oz bottle, has never leaked, and the pouch is quite big and easily fits our VW key plus more.

While not all of these items are essential for running, I do enjoy using them when I'm running (and when I'm not). Maybe there's a great holiday gift in here for one of your friends - or for your own wish list.

I'd love to hear what some of your favorite items are right now that are helping make your run life a bit brighter.

If you're a marathon runner, what's your top tip for runners training for (or thinking about) their first marathon?

No. 4: Fly With The Winners

Earlier this year, Oiselle put out the Flight Manual. The Flight Manual puts forth a set of ideas meant to create success in running and in life. As I've read these ideas, certain people, friendships, experiences, come to mind. It's an interesting way to look at how we approach our every day interactions, who we want to be and what kind of impact we want to make. Number 4 is fresh in my mind today.

It's so true that who we align ourselves with is incredibly important. Life is short and we only get one go at it, so why not drench ourselves in positivity, strength, and fun? "The Winners" aren't always the one crossing the finish line first or making the most money. "The Winners" as I see it are those who make me stronger, happier, and more fulfilled.

We recently had the amazing good fortune to have an event with Sally Bergesen, Founder + CEO of Oiselle, and Kara Goucher. Both Sally and Kara talked about the importance of women supporting other women, in running and in life. About the importance of being true to oneself, not being afraid to go after our goals, and not being afraid of accepting help and support. We all need it. Thankfully, I have girlfriends who I can count on no matter what. To laugh with, cry with, and celebrate with. The evening was unforgettable, filled with laughter and new friends. Once again, I feel blessed to be part of this team, but even more importantly, proud to support this company.

I thought this would be the perfect time to share a couple of my favorite Oiselle gear! When I first got hooked on Oiselle back in 2010, the line was pretty limited - some shorts, 50/50 tees, and running tops. It's been fun, but also a bit overwhelming, to see all the great stuff coming from the brand lately. Here are two outfits I'm loving for fall, which go seamlessly from the road to the farmers market.

The Lux Layer is amazing (think soft and silky) and I think I'm on fall #3 with these Flow Tights (light fleece lining, 3/4 length perfect for those cool morning runs).

I've had the Tracker Jacket for about a month now and have probably worn it at least 20 times. It's lightweight, comfortable, and I love the asymmetrical zip. The O Snap tank - also lux fabric - is fitted, but not too fitted, with a keyhole back. And the flow tights are a perfect match. I wore this to the gym so I could watch the TCS NYC Marathon coverage while getting some miles in on the treadmill before we headed to the farmers market to pick up apples and a huge bag of veggies.

The NYC Marathon holds a special place in my heart. A big congratulations to all who ran it on Sunday, especially my good friend Grace who finished her 4th NYC marathon!

How We Get Around

When Woody and I started telling people we were moving to Denver, and were planning to buy a house, many people would ask if we were going to get a dog. You know, when people get a house, or at least move out of the city and have a larger apartment, they get a dog. Well, we weren’t, and aren’t, getting a dog. What we have wanted to get since we started planning our move however, were bikes.

If you saw this post last fall, you know I hadn’t been on a bike in well over a decade until last year. But since we have just one car, which we want to use as little as possible, and Denver has a great trail system plus somewhat bike-friendly roads, why not take advantage of it? Just in time for the winter storm that hit on Sunday, we picked up the newest members of our family!

My new bike

I chose a hybrid because I’ll be using this for part of my commute on some days, to go to the farmers market and nearby restaurants and coffee shops and other fun times around town. I thought about a step-through cruiser, but decided on this one because it’s more versatile. Details are important so I picked out this water bottle holder specifically; it’s one of my favorite things about the bike. Nothing wrong with adding a little feminine touch.

Bird on bike

Thankfully we made it back to our house just before the rain started to come down. We’re are pretty certain our new bikes are going to change our lives tremendously, and I’m beyond thrilled about it!

Another form of transportation, at least exercise, for me, has been wearing down so I also did a little shoe shopping on Saturday. A girl can’t have too many bright pairs of shoes, right?

Brooks Ravenna 2

Brooks Ravenna

I’ve been wearing Brooks Ravenna for the past several years as my training/gym shoes. After dealing with so many stress fractures I found that these work well for me and I guess because I haven’t had a fracture in a foot since I started wearing them it’s best to stay faithful. These felt a bit different than they have in past years but not so much that I was going to risk trying something different. With the Bolder Boulder coming up in a few weeks I’ll stick with my Mizuno Wave Elixir’s for race day.

If you have a bike – what type do you have? Where’s your favorite place to go on it? Do you have any tips for a newbie? * Are you loyal to a specific type of running shoe? * Do you train and race in different types of shoes?

Hope all of you Mom’s had a great Mother’s Day!

Race Report: Japan Run (4M)

So yeah, this is a bit overdue. The past week has been a bit hectic and draining. I did not run the Brooklyn Half Marathon today like thousands of New Yorkers, but I want to say a big congratulations to those who did, like Grace & April!!

Last Sunday I ran the Japan Run, an annual four mile New York Road Runners race in Central Park that I’ve run several times but not in the last few years. I’ve been picking my races carefully this year, and this was my second race of the year – the first being this very cold one. I woke up to rain, so I put a few extra items in my bag and headed up to Central Park. The start line of this race has moved down to near East 68th Street from 102nd when I last ran it, which I much prefer since we were able to tackle Cat Hill very early on.

Japan Run Bag Drop

Since Boston, NYRR has instituted several new procedures – runners can only check clear plastic bags that are provided by NYRR, security checks at the porta-potties – and expected that it would take a bit more time to get through it all, but it actually wasn’t bad. Plus, I found out that if I fold it up and put it in the clear plastic bag, that I can still use my incredibly awesome Oiselle spike bag.

I found shelter from the light rain for a bit under a bridge with a ton of other runners then headed to the corral about 15 minutes before the race starts. I never quite understand why they close the corrals 10 minutes before the start (although usually you can find a place to sneak in). As we were getting the race instructions, the clouds started to part and the sun came out in full force. I had been a little worried about my wardrobe choice when it was damp and chilly but then thankful that I went with just my Oiselle singlet and distance shorts by the time I hit the top of Cat Hill!

I started a bit conservatively this time but each time I knocked off another hill my confidence rose a little and my speed crept up just a tad. While there were thousands of people running, for some reason it didn’t seem as crowded and hectic at the start and throughout as it usually does. While I don’t run in the park as often as I used to, I still know it very well which is always helpful when running a race. It’s good to know what’s ahead so you can adjust your speed or plan depending on how you’re feeling and how the race is going.

There were a ton of people out for this race – many of whom had run the UAE 10K the day before and many who were planning to run the Brooklyn Half today. It turned out to be a really beautiful mother’s day and a great race! While not my fastest time, I’m still happy with how I did and ready to tackle my next two races that are coming up quickly!

Japan Run finish

Apparently I had some trouble getting my number on straight that morning!

There was a pretty big post-race festival along the Mall but I decided to head out and walk down to Times Square to pick up the subway since it was a beautiful day and still pretty early. Usually I’d rather be just about anywhere except Times Square, but I’ve been finding myself there more often lately for one reason or another. This time, for some reason, I felt the need to stop and get a picture.

Oiselle Times Square

Next race up is May 30th – AHA Wall Street Run (in my ‘hood!) – then the NYRR Oakley Mini 10K on June 8th!

Are you racing this weekend or have one coming up?

I Once Got a Pair of Shoes

So, you might remember a few months ago Mizuno USA was taking over the blog world and twitter feeds of runners around the country. The sports apparel and shoe company developed this program called The Mezamashii Project. I’m sure most of you know what this is, but for those of you you don’t, the invite which I received one awesome day says, this…

In Japanese, the word mezamashii means “brilliant.”

We are on a quest to deliver more mezamashii – more ecstatic, electric, wind-in-your heart running. More brilliant running.

So instead of spending millions of dollars on advertising to talk about our shoes, we’re putting our money where your feet are – by giving you a free pair.

IMG_2403

To say I was elated to get this in the mail is an understatement. A free pair of running shoes? And I get to pick it out!?! Seriously awesome.

I’m quite picky about my shoes, though – running and non-running – because of all the time I spend on my feet but mostly because of the numerous stress fractures I’ve incurred over the past few years in my feet and legs. Wearing the right shoes is incredibly important. It took a bit of research and a trip to a running store before I made the call and ordered my shoes. But eventually I chose the Wave Elixir 7

WP_000159

WP_000161

Before these even arrived they were designated “running only shoes.” While I’m well aware that runners should always have a pair that is for running only and use other pairs of shoes for the gym or walking around town, but my wallet just doesn’t let me purchase two pairs of shoes over $100 at the same time. I’ve been very good at sticking to this and only wearing these shoes when running. To the point where I made sacrifices in my suitcase to take both pairs of running shoes on vacation to Northern Michigan in July.

So what do I think of these shoes? I’ve never worn Mizuno before so I had no idea what to expect. They are very different from the Brooks Ravenna I’m used too, but that’s one thing I love about them. While they fall under Mizuno’s support line of shoes, they are only 7.7oz with a stack height of 27mm for the heel and 15mm for the forefoot. Compare this to 9.5oz for the Brooks Ravenna with a stack height of 30mm for the heel and 21mm for the forefoot. I can definitely feel the road a lot more intimately with the Elixir than the Ravenna. The toe box is comfortable and overall the shoe fits snuggly. The upper is pretty thin and mesh (not sure if that’s the technical name) so if it’s raining, your foot is gonna get wet pretty quickly.

I thought I was getting a different color than what came, and I’ve never had shoes that are so, well, bright, but I actually love them! I feel fast and strong when I put them on. I feel like a runner. This feeling could also be attributed to the fact that I only wear them when I run, but I also think it’s because they look fast and they feel fast. While I still love my Ravenna’s and wear them for all my gym workouts, I do love the Mizuno Elixir 7.

Check out the Mezamashii Project HERE, if for no other reason than to see the really cool website they built!

[Bloggers note: I received these shoes free of charge from Mizuno USA in exchange for giving them a try. This review is completely my own; I was not paid for this post.]

My Visit To The Oiselle Headquarters

Back in July when Woody and I were in Seattle, which seems ages ago now, I had the incredible opportunity to meet Sally Bergesen, founder and CEO (plus designer) of Oiselle, and her marketing guru, Sarah MacKay. As you might remember, just prior to this trip I held a giveaway for an Oiselle Bird Tee. After a few e-mail exchanges with Sarah, I mentioned our vacation to Seattle was fast approaching and asked if I could stop by while we were in town. She quickly and graciously agreed. To say I was thrilled would be an understatement. I was turning our vacation into a runners dream! A blogger meet-up dinner, a race, running along the waterfront, a run with the Greenlake Running Group and the chance to meet the women behind a great running apparel company!

I showed up at their office, which is in a low-slung building that is also home to a country music bar, just blocks from the uber-popular Green Lake, Wednesday afternoon. The area is somewhat of an outdoor sports mecca, at least for non-Seattleites like me. Not only are the trails around the lake perfect for running, countless sports fields, and water sports, but there are numerous running shops in the area including Super Jock & Jill, Road Runners Sports, Title Nine, and I know I’m missing another one.

I buzzed up and moments later Sarah was greeting me. I followed her upstairs and to their open plan office where she introduced me to Sally. I have to admit, I was a little surprised by how small their office is at first but I was also slightly relieved because there is not one ounce of intimidation floating around in there. These women are nothing if not low-key and fun. They showed me around by standing in the middle of the room and pointing around. Everyone works in one room (and by ‘everyone’ I mean the small staff of four). Their desks are close to one another along one wall, there’s a conference table butting up against another wall, a fridge, plenty of runners snacks, a foam roller, exercise ball and clothes racks. Sally’s inspiration board also doubles as a room divider. This is where the genius happens and the happiness comes from! All from this one room!

Sally began running in high school and after a stint in France during college she found running again. After moving to Seattle, she joined Club Northwest and made their cross country nationals team seven times. Fast forward a few years and two kids later, she got back into racing in 2003 and went shopping for new running shorts and her life changed.

She started Oiselle so women (including herself) would have an alternative to the running apparel made by big-name running shoe companies that typically think of apparel as an afterthought. No more poufy, bagging shorts that are less than flattering. No more ugly colors and ineffective fabrics. She wanted to design running apparel that any woman would love to wear, whether racing to win or running to stay (or get) in shape. With a background in branding and marketing, Sally has an eye for color and design. This, coupled with her passion for running made her the perfect person to start a running apparel company.

When it comes to color and fabric, Sally has strong opinions. In her own words:

“I’m a huge believer in only choosing beautiful fabrics. But finding “the right fabric” and a manufacturer that can still make it affordable is the hardest part of what we do. I choose our fabrics based on how well they perform and the “seduction factor.” When you touch it, does it draw you in and make you want to wear it?”

“Color is very emotional and powerful. Nowhere do we experience that more than here in Seattle! With months of gray days, we often need bright, fun color just to lift us up. But I also think sports are just a natural fit for bright. Having said that, I take issue with too many stereotypically girlish colors. While we’re not afraid to play around with pink, it’s not what drives our brand. We’re making apparel for women who are past the pink, tutu phase of life, nor do they want to regress there.”

Today, Oiselle can be found in over 200 running shops nationwide. Sally was quite clear that they are very selective about where they will sell Oiselle apparel. The stores must be well merchandised, understand running and runners, and offer quality products and customer service. In other words, you won’t find Oiselle stocked on the racks at your local Sports Authority or Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Their shipping ‘warehouse’ is down the hall from their office. It’s a large room with boxes neatly stacked on shelving around the room, each with a sheet of paper taped to the front to keep track of inventory and tables for packing. This is where all the shipping is done, whether it is to you at home after ordering from their online store, or to a running shop in Texas. (Remember how I mentioned there is no elevator in this building?)

IMG_0846IMG_0847

While in the warehouse, they picked a few things out of the boxes for me, including a pair of Lori Shorts, which are the shortest running shorts I’ve ever worn, and a Ravenna tank (there is a street by the same name near the office), which has become my favorite running top and I’ve worn more than once in a week. Don’t worry, I wash it! The top incredibly lightweight, I’ve never had an issue with it riding up and most importantly during these hot days, it doesn’t show sweat!! It’s a miracle fabric. This is me sporting it last Saturday for Summer Streets!

Photo_5D38DC8B-1832-4067-AFF4-470322454BE1

I had an absolutely great time meeting Sally (below right) and Sarah; it was one of the highlights of the trip for me. Their passion for running, Oiselle and the runners who love Oiselle, is immediately apparent. If you follow them on Twitter or Facebook, you know they love talking with runners and supporting running addictions everywhere! (You’re also likely to often see some whacky pictures along the way, too!) And if you order from their online store, don’t expect to just get a pair of shorts in a mailer, they take the time to include a handwritten note!

IMG_0849

When I left their office, I knew I found a company I wanted to support. Not only is Oiselle running apparel beautiful and functional, but the company is run by passionate, intelligent, and dedicated women who are having fun doing what they love and supporting women runners along the way.

Just a quick note, Oiselle started to roll out the Fall line, so hurry to their online store to check it out. They fly out quickly! (use code RUNTODAY to get 10% off your first order!)
