Loving the Unconventional

Woody and I broke free of Manhattan Saturday afternoon and headed to Brooklyn. If you’re not familiar of life in NYC, while many people live in one borough and work in another, there are also many people who live in one borough and never leave that borough, sometimes for their entire life (it’s sadly true). I think one of the reasons for this is because of public transportation. While it can be a blessing, it also can be a hindrance because it can take literally hours to get from one borough to the next.

Since we moved downtown we’ve spent a bit more time in Brooklyn than we did when we lived on the Upper East Side since it takes so much less time to get there. Saturday we went to the food & travel show which I mentioned Friday. It was a pretty cool event, mostly because we were able to sample wine from a lot of wineries in the area and because I spun the wheel and won us a $25 zipcar credit! Not bad if you ask me!

While we were there we found out that Dekalb Market is only a short walk from One Hanson place. The weather was amazing, we had no where to be anytime soon, we headed over there. What an awesome find!

Dekalb Market, is housed in a collection of salvaged shipping containers, that bring together Brooklyn’s creative entrepreneurs in a community setting that include an incubator farm, events and performance venue, and a collection of eateries and work-sell spaces.”

The setup is so unique and unconventional, all the shops and food vendors are housed in shipping crates. I love how it gives creative people another platform for selling their work. While there are several places like this in NYC (Hester Street Market, Brooklyn Flea) it’s a great trend for small businesses and people who enjoy buying directly from the make the products. There are some more permanent vendors and others that are part time since the market is open 7 days a week. There’s a garden (still early in the growing season now) and play space for kids. It is a really comfortable, easy going place. We are definitely heading back there again and getting some grub because it all smelled and looked amazing! My blackcurrant lemonade was pretty refreshing on the warm afternoon!

  • Lemonade, iced tea or beer?
  • What’s your favorite way to spend a Saturday afternoon?

Lemonade! I could drink that all summer long. Last weekend i spent Saturday afternoon at the local farm market. Its fun to just walk around and see all the people and home grown food. I think it would be awesome to live in NYC - my husband still has never been there.

ONE cold beer :)

Looks like you had a great weekend and I'm so glad the weather has been cooperating. More warm weekends please! As you know, I love weekends filled with yoga (or any other great workout), brunch, and good people.
