5 for Friday

So, it's April 1st. Not only has this week has gone by quickly, but it seems like this year is flying by too! Actually, I'm king of glad this week has gone by fast cause I'm ready for the weekend and some time to relax. How about you?

1. I made an appointment to see a doc about my weird leg issue. The massage Tuesday didn't help as I had hoped it would, so I need to try something different. A while back, Megan tweeted that she really liked her doc and would recommend him to anyone in NYC. So, she sent me (and a few others) his info but I hadn't done anything with it. I'm not a big fan of my 'official' GP, so I've been thinking about finding a new one, and this guy seems to do everything: he's a GP, sports med, acupuncture, and more. Thankfully I was able to get an appointment for Monday and I really hope he can help me find some relief. Today is my rest day, but tomorrow I have 8 miles on tap.

2. While Woody goes to the Yankees/Tigers game at Yankee Stadium (go Tigers!), I'll be checking out the NYC Vegetarian Festival. It sounds interesting, let's hope it lives up to the hype!

3. I'm reading "The Long Run" by Matt Long, and while it's taking me longer to finish it than I thought, it's definitely due to lack of reading time and not lack of want. This week I've been able to read a little during my commute on the subway and the past two days I've nearly started to cry! The book is so good but incredibly emotional. I hope to finish the book over the weekend so I can write a book review, but I'll tell you right now, if you haven't read this book yet, go get it.

4. It may be because I live in NYC, but I read the NY Times online a lot. It's basically my go to source for news online. Well, Monday they put up their pay wall. While other papers like the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times put up a pay wall quite a while ago, the NYT is the first general news paper to do so. So, the deal is that everyone is given 20 freebies per month and then they're locked out. BUT, here's the thing: if you get to an article through a link on google, an aggregator or another site, it doesn't count against your 20 views. Good to know, right?

5. While it's definitely something that concerns me on many levels, I don't often write about the obesity problems our country (and world, really) is facing. But, this week I've seen two very interesting articles I thought I'd share with you. First is "Being Fat in America," an article on Huffington Post by John Robbins that is both terrifying and heart lifting. The other is a piece on the NY Times Well Blog about a recent study that was conducted on the stigma that surrounds overweight people, which may be enhanced by all the anti-obesity campaigns. Hopefully it will make people stop and think about how they treat others. We shouldn't forget the golden rule.

One last, extra thing. The next event hosted by the NYRR Young Professionals Committee is April 13th. Like our last one (the runner's fashion show), this is another ladies-only night. Lauren Slayton of Foodtrainers is coming to speak about all things nutrition for women runners. It's going to be a great event and I hope you can make it if you're in town. The night is free, but we do as that you RSVP. Let me know if you have any questions!
  • What's the best April Fools joke you know?
  • How will you be spending the weekend?

great post! And go Yanks!! I thought about going to that food festival, but studying may need to take precedence (boo). I looked for that book at Barnes & Noble the other day but couldn't find it!

Checking out the articles you linked to - this topic is evolving all the time, you know? Have a great weekend :)

Pay walls are frustrating. I understand it from an economic side- newspapers are struggling so much these days. On the other hand, they do make money from our visits from their advertisers. It's an interesting issue.

Thanks for sharing these articles. I will definitely go back and read them, as they sound very interesting.
I hope the Vegetarian Festival was fun. Even though I love meat, I would love to go to a festival like this!! Ideas ideas, I need them!
