Weekend Weather Workout Woes

What a weekend!

Saturday was pretty nice and got into the high 40's by the middle of the afternoon, I think. It was such a great change from the past week when we had the coldest days of the season so far! I got out for a nice run Saturday morning and ran about 5.5 miles. It was a really great run actually. Right now I'm not training for any race in particular (although hopefully that will change come the middle of January!) so I usually go out with an idea of how far I want to go, but really decide when I'm out on the run. Unfortunately I don't have a watch with GPS, so I can't get an exact distance, but I can estimate. Like Saturday, I didn't go quite as far as I go on my 6 mile route, but I did go farther than my 5milers, so I'm somewhere around 5.5. I decide how far to go based on the weather, how my legs are feeling and how my sinuses are reacting to the temperatures. It was a pretty good day and I'm sure I could have gone farther, but it was what it was.

We had been forewarned about the upcoming massive storm system that was going to hit the area Saturday night, so I knew ahead of time that a run was very unlikely. We've actually been really lucky with our weekend weather the last few months so it was about time something happened to damped weekend plans! Woody was going to go to the gym near City Hall (the one we go to on Wall St is closed on Sunday) but I was just planning to use the gym in our building and do mostly cardio. Well, we woke up to howling winds and lots of rain. Our building was creaking like crazy! Woody quickly decided to stay in and go to the gym downstairs with me! I do not like running on a treadmill, but I have to get used to it in order to run through the winter. To make it a little more interesting, I decided to split up my workout. There were a few other people in the gym, but not too many so we didn't have to worry about people waiting for machines.
  • dynamic stretches
  • free weights
  • 3 miles running
  • free weights
  • 1 quick mile running
  • 20 minutes elliptical
  • stretching
It was good to switch things up a bit and my heart rate stayed up throughout the workout since I didn't take much time to rest between the segments. I definitely hope to try this a bit more moving forward. Unfortunately due to the setup of our regular gym, it's just not possible there, but I can do it here.

Two weeks ago you might remember that I tried an after work strength workout. Well, because of my work schedule last week I wasn't able to fit one in, but I hope to this week. I don't think I'll be working such late nights so it'll be easier to do!

Before I go, I would be a really bad wife if I didn't tell you that Woody made an incredible dinner for us last night! It was his turn to cook and he put together some great tacos, shredding chicken and cooking it in a glaze from Cherry Republic, avocado, sauteed onion, garlic and peppers seasoned with a little chipotle, tomatoes, fresh shredded organic jack cheese and lettuce. Black beans and a few tortilla chips made with chia seeds on the side. It was absolutely delicious and I was thrilled! I wish I had a picture to share but none of them came out well. Of course, I helped with the clean up! It was sooo good and I think he should cook more often!

Did you get hit by the huge storm too? Did you brave the weather and head out for a run?

Our Saturday weather was not ideal for running...the temperature (mid 30's) wasn't bad, but the steady rain was enough to encourage me to stay in bed. Unfortunately, I was registered for a race. A trail race. A trail race that the rain had reduced to a 7.8 mile slog through ankle deep mud. It was a slippery, exhausting blast.

I had planned to maybe run before work this morning, but school was cancelled due to windchills of -15, so I rethought that plan. Since I have the day off, I'm hoping to hit the gym for the first time in around 6 months.

Your supper sounds delicious! Yea for husbands who cook. :)

We got a little bit of snow on Friday night and then torential downpours all day Sunday. I did venture out to walk the dog, but I stuck to the treadmill for running.

The only way I can deal with running on a treadmill is setting up my laptop so I can watch TV while I do it.

Switching between treadmill and weights is such a great idea! I hate the treadmill, so this sounds like the perfect way to mix it up. As for storm, um, I live in Minnesota, so YES we absolutely got hit with it. :)

The weather was crazy yesterday! Treadmill isn't much fun, but I think being frozen solid is worse! Your dinner sounded delicious even to my g-free, vegetarian self!!
