It's Cold Out There

Winter has arrived! Yesterday we had a nasty rain/snow/slush storm that lasted many hours and made getting around a little annoying. Subway delays, bus delays, PATH delays. Oh, well. It's about time it started to get cold around here.

Last night Woody and I headed out in the nasty weather to make our way to Jersey. We don't often get across the river, usually takes something big - like a Birthday party in Hoboken, brunch with friends in Jersey City, a big music festival at Liberty State Park (when the weather was actually worse than last night) or a hockey game. after a trip that took us almost two hours to get from the UES to Newark (much longer than it should have) we met up with fellow MSU Alumni Club members at a bar right across from the Prudential Center and then headed over for the game. The stadium is really nice, definitely nicer than Joe Louis, the Red Wings home ice, but we both found it slightly odd that there were guys rolling cigars in the concourse. Never know what you're going to see. Anyway, it was a pretty good game but unfortunately the Red Wings lost in an overtime sudden death shoot out. :( Our trip back was much easier as we opted for New Jersey transit rather than the PATH. This is why we do not live in Jersey.

Woody stayed home from the gym this morning. After a few tough workouts he needed to get a little more shut eye and give his muscles some rest time. I opted to head out in the cold and get a really good cardio workout in. I did 65 minutes on the elliptical, followed by a good 25 minute stretching session (I'll explain why in another post) and another 15 min +2 min cool down on the bike. It was a really good workout and have decided to focus on cardio this week. Build up my time which has shortened a bit since the marathon and injury.

I was starving by the time I got home and was thrilled that Woody had already made coffee. He's big into trying different flavors and countries of origin. This week we are having Costa Rican coffee from Oren's Roast. We find we like it better than the Costa Rican from Grace's Market (a "gourmet" market around the corner from us - if you watch "Gossip Girl" you hear Lily suggest it this past week for Thanksgiving dinner). I'm trying out Almond Breeze almond milk this week, so I put a little of that in the coffee to tide me over while cooking breakfast. Delicious!

I've heard a lot about these Arnold's Sandwich thins and decided to try them out this week, so I picked up a package of the Whole Wheat version from the store on the way home from the gym. They're only 100 calories, so 40 less than if I had a sandwich with my regular bread, so I thought, if they're good, then they're a good way to cut out a few calories!

Breakfast consisted of 3 egg whites, 1/2 egg yolk with 2 tbs corn (sounds odd, but it's really good), fresh ground pepper and a few pinches of herbs de provence on an Arnold's Sandwich thin spread with avocado (great source of healthy fats) and topped with ketchup. I also had a banana, grapes, and my coffee. I have to say, my breakfast today was SO good! It was exactly what I needed after the workout. The sandwich thin was pretty good. I love bread, especially with whole grains and seeds that you can see and add to a thick heart texture. So, I was a bit cautious about these thins, wondering if they'd be too thin. Actually, it was just right and has a good texture. My one concern is that the ingredient list is pretty long and includes soy and other ingredients I'm not to sure about. I think I will eat these sparingly, but they are a keeper. One hint, if you toast them, best to toast on the low setting or they'll curl (mine did a little).

Now, I'm off to do a little Christmas shopping and to find a new book since I finished In Defense of Food, which I will review shortly!

Have a great day and don't forget, only a few more hours to enter the Holiday Music Giveaway!!

The Thins are very good for lunch. I frequently make a tuna sandwich using them and a Chicken of the Sea ready to eat Tuna salad cup which is 80 calories. Easy , low calorie , good Omega 3 oil. I have problems finding them sometimes. They sell out pretty quickly here.
