Did you know that today is the National Girls and Women in Sports Day?
The day is organized by the National Girls & Women in Sports Coalition which includes Girls, Inc, the Girl Scouts, National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, National Women's Law Center, and the Women's Sports Foundation. It's meant to encourage girls and women to participate in sports and recognize achievements through community events and awareness.
Communities, organizations, schools and businesses are encouraged to create opportunities such as athletic events (races or fun runs, tournaments, etc), educational forums, fitness classes, clinics, honor ceremonies for outstanding student athletes, emphasis on health, fitness and sports books in libraries and at bookstores, and more.
I haven't heard of any activities in NYC observing the NGWSD, but with a quick google search I did find quite a few news hits. Is there an event in your community? If there isn't, why not grab a few of your girlfriends or your daughter, mother, or sister, and go for a jog, play a game of basketball or grab a pair of ski's and enjoy a recent snowfall!
