Cup of Joe

Confession time: I have not been sleeping well.

For the past month and a half or two months, I have not been sleeping well at all. Either it takes me a long time to fall asleep (and it's only sometimes due to Woody's snoring, or 'heavy breathing.') or I wake up several times during the night. Last week we started using the little humidifier we had stored away and that seemed to help a bit, but last night was particularly brutal. While I wasn't feeling too bad when I first woke up this morning, I definitely need some Joe this morning. Since my own personal coffee roaster is at work, I used one of the Folgers Instant Coffee samples I still have left. It hit the spot.

I wrote a while ago about sleep and how important it is. Sleep is important for good memory, to give you energy, repairs muscles, helps control blood pressure, regulates appetite, and much, much more. Knowing all of this, it's especially annoying to me when I make sure to get in bed with plenty of hours to sleep ahead of me, and then it doesn't work out. Last night, it took a good 30-45 minutes for me to fall asleep. I had a myriad of thoughts racing through my mind and couldn't seem to push them out. I'm sure it was because I didn't turn off the computer until about 20 minutes before I got in bed. Let me just say, that is not a good idea. Then, I was up for a good hour in the middle of the night and was very restless. Was not a good night. I'm glad I was planning to sleep in a little bit since I have my weekly trip to the Farmers Market (which is getting a bit bigger now since it's going to be 58 degrees today!) and Trader Joe's Monday morning and go straight from the gym. I'm not dragging too much, but my workout this morning was not as good as it could have been. I felt like I had bricks attached to my feet and I just didn't have my usual vigor. Don't you hate when that happens?

So, I need to get more sleep tonight, and every night for that matter. Seems I need to focus on some of the 'fall asleep fast' tips like diming the lighting in the apartment starting an hour before I go to sleep and fighting my addiction to the computer by turning it off earlier. Really, we probably shouldn't be watching for the weather forecast on the local news from bed, but it always happens. Maybe one day we'll break that habit.

Do you have any good 'fall asleep fast' tips that might help me? I'd love to hear them.

Hope you have a great day! I'm going to take a walk this afternoon to enjoy the beautiful Spring weather!

I happen to be a pro at sleeping, like I can go to bed on any given night at 9 pm no problem. I'd say, stop drinking caffeine by the time you leave work. A tylenol PM might help too and usually if I read before I go to bed I start to get more tired than if I had been watching TV.

Oh I'm so sorry. I wish I knew any good tips except warm milk and a book in bed. '

However I fall asleep at the drop of a hat!

I hope you find something that will work for you.

I wish I could help! I am one of those people who can sleep anywhere, anytime. To the point where I almost always feel tired. At least you had your folgers!

Part of getting good rest is getting into a routine...just like you have a routine for running (stretching, lacing up, etc). If you have a routine, your head knows that it's time for bed. Start reading before bed, or doing some stretches. Do this consistently and your brain will remind itself that this is what you do when you go to sleep.

I've also heard lavender is a calming scent that puts people to sleep. And a change in temperature...like wear mittens and socks (example) to warm yourself off, and then take them off before going to bed. The cooling effect will make you "sleepy." I've never done the mitten thing but i have tried the socks and it actually works. But it may all be in my head!

And if Woody's heaving breathing is still bothering you, try ear plugs! I love my ear plugs and eye mask!
